Empowering the Next Generation: Q-PLAN Showcases Youth Visions for an Inclusive Bioeconomy
The voices of young people, educators, and stakeholders across Europe have come together to deliver clear, evidence-based recommendations on education, career development, and communication strategies to strengthen youth engagement in the bioeconomy.
Through the “Our GenB Future” Position Paper—developed by Q-PLAN International in the framework of the GenB Project—young individuals share a bold, forward-looking vision for a bioeconomy that is practical, inclusive, and driven by real-world opportunities.
Let’s dive into what the youth themselves emphasized:
“We want to apply what we learn!” Young participants strongly advocate for experiential learning in bioeconomy education. They envision hands-on activities, outdoor education, and project-based learning integrated from primary school to university. Imagine learning to fabricate things from scratch using bio-based materials – that’s the practical skill development they’re asking for!
“Show us the path!” Clear career pathways are crucial. The youth highlighted the need for more internships, apprenticeships, and mentorship programs in diverse bioeconomy fields, from bioprocess research and bio-fashion design to sustainable tourism and ecosystem facilitation. They even developed a 4-step roadmap for career planning, starting with understanding personal passions and ending with gaining practical experience!
“Our communities need to thrive!” The call for an inclusive and equitable bioeconomy was loud and clear. Participants stressed the importance of empowering marginalized communities (like ethnic minorities, low-income populations, and refugees) through digitalliteracy skills, microfinance, and integrating them into supply chains. They emphasized strengthening rural economies by boosting local jobs like eco-tourism and bio-based crafts, ensuring benefits are shared widely.
“Give us a seat at the table!” Young people demand meaningful inclusion in policymaking. They want simplified regulations, youth advisory boards, and dedicated spaces to contribute their input, advocating for increased youth representation in formal bodies like the EU Youth Dialogue and the European Bioeconomy Stakeholder Platform.
This Position Paper is a testament to the innovative spirit and commitment of young generations to creating a forward-thinking, inclusive, and fair bioeconomy.
At Q-PLAN International, we are proud to share the insights of youth about the future of the bioeconomy as collected through the Position Paper- “Our GenB future”, a document shaped by Q-PLAN in the context of GenB Project, by the powerful perspectives of young people across Europe. Let the young generation build a sustainable future!
